Ayurveda

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Ayurveda or “science of life” is an ancient Indian system of medicine found on the immutable laws of nature. This traditional healing system teaches that not only can we halt the growth of disease, but we can actually eliminate it, through nutritional guidelines, exercise, stress reduction techniques and other treatment therapies.

Ayurveda views each patient as a unique, complex individual. Unlike modern western medicine, which focuses on the treatment of symptoms of an illness, Ayurveda concentrates on the source of the patient’s disease, using natural treatments to promote each person’s inherent self-healing abilities.

The basis of Ayurvedic philosophy is the belief that the intelligence of the natural world is within each of us. The five basic elements of the universe – ether, air, fire, water and earth – combine in the body into three characteristic humors (doshas): Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth). Ayurvedic Medicine stimulates our inner intelligence, and activates our own unlimited healing potential, in order to achieve healthful balance of the three doshas.

Ayurveda and your Prakriti

Each of us is born with a unique combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This combination in Ayurveda is known as our psychosomatic constitution, or prakriti. An Ayurvedic physician uses pulse diagnosis, along with lab tests and an extensive medical history, to determine an individual’s particular constitution and imbalances. The physician then recommends certain herbs, foods, vitamins, exercises and other treatments that will bring the individual’s doshas into balance and promote optimal health.

Ayurvedic treatment of Illness

The science of Ayurvedic medicine has proven its effectiveness over many centuries of use. Now, modern scientific research, much of it documented in medical journals such as Lancet and The British Medical Journal, has begun to validate its treatment modalities.

Ayurveda can treat any condition of illness and disease, and has proven to be especially effective in the treatment of: asthma, allergies, arthritis, anxiety, diabetes, depression, hepatitis, insomnia, obesity, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disorders, hypertension, liver disorders, neurological disorders, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and heart disease.
